The article "Friends With Benefits: Do Facebook Friends Provide the Same Support as Those in Real Life?" by Kate Dailey. Published by Newsweek June 15,2009.
This article is about the author explaining the difference between being friends with people on Facebook and being friends with somebody in person and talking to them face-to-face. In the article, the author mentions that Facebook might be the perfect venue for tragic news. What she means by this, is that when somebody you may not know very well posts something tragic such as a death in the family or a family dog dying, people will feel the need to post sympathetic things to the person on their status and that is the only way you would know about it, is when they post it. The author also mentions that when you have 700 or more friends on Facebook, your less likely to actually talk to every "friend" you added to your friends list. According to the article Facebook doesn't make anybody a better friend, it just makes them more of an acquaintance because there just another person who knows your business when maybe you really didn't want them too because you don't know them very well. According to Rebecca G. Adams who is a professor at the University of North Carolina, in real life, friendships don't have to be equal or close and we know from research that friendships aren't as voluntary as they seem.
I can see why the author said what she said because I've noticed the things she mentioned in her article. I have over 685 Facebook friends, some of them being people I had classes with in high school and some that I played sports with over the years and they just linger on my friends list as people to have. I guess I am part of those people who post whatever I want on my statuses and enjoy the amount of "likes" on a certain post because it's the attention people are bringing to the one status they saw on there news feed Over all, I do agree with the author that Facebook doesn't always make people better friends but more acquaintances than we were before when we were just two people passing each other in the school hallways.

The article "Breaking: At least 2 dead,100 reported injured in Boston Marathon explosions" by unknown author on MSN.com. http://news.msn.com/us/explosion-reported-near-boston-marathon
This article is about the Boston Bomb Attack that happened on Monday April 15th 2013. According to the article, one of the 2 people reported dead is an 8 year old but the other 100 are seriously injured. The White House and the FBI are claiming this to be a terrorist attack. Also, there was a fire attack at the John F. Kennedy library a few miles away. Because of this, all cell phone services have been shut down to prevent any potential explosives from a cell phone. As people were cheering on the runners, just a little over four hours, the explosive happened. Not only some of the runners were injured, but a lady was carried by the Ambulance with a bloody leg gushing out blood into the Medical Tent to get taken care of.
Personally, I am getting kind of annoyed about bad things always happening to people who are just minding their own business. This kind of attack shouldn't have happened especially because there were a lot of families attending the event. Now kids, who are very young, will probably feel traumatized for a very long time because of this event. I would think that after 9/11 happened in 2001, people would learn from that and not attack another city or country again. This is sickening to know that someone would have this much courage to kill other people they don't know.

The Article "Powerball winner to pay neighbors' rents" by Jonathan Berr published by MSN http://t.money.msn.com/now/powerball-winner-to-pay-neighbors-rents is about a guy named Pedro Quezada who won the lottery in New Jersey. Before he became a multi-millionaire, he had to pay off 29,000 in child support and had an outstanding arrest warrant. As soon as he won the lottery, he decided to pay his neighbors' who lived on his streets house mortgage and rent bills since he could afford it. He won $338,000,000,000 in the Powerball. Since his winnings, he has decided to put his retail store up for sale and according to the article his future plans are unsure of what he is going to do with the rest of the money.
I think this article is really interesting to read about. Not only because it's fascinating to see someone reach out to others around them and not be selfish with the money, but to also see that someone who was struggling with money once before, won the Powerball out of pure luck. I think it's very interesting how someone can win that much money when there are billions of people in this world who are trying to win the same thing. I think it's really cool what he did for others in his neighborhood.

The article "A Required Course in Beating the Freshman Blues" by Rene Sanchez, The Writers Response Book. The Article is about how colleges are starting to pay attention to the students needs over their own as a college.
This article is about how Colleges and Universities cannot afford to lose any students after their freshman year of college and to keep this from happening, colleges are putting all the freshman in the same dorm area as each other and have been hiring more counselors to be more involved with the freshman and students academic lives and just acknowledge to the students that someone is their to help them when they need it. In the article is says " We've finally realized that helping students succeed takes much more than what we've been doing." From reading this, we can see as readers that the college is taking the first step to reach out to students and really caring about how they can make the college life better for them in any way possible.
After reading this article, I thought it was cool to see that they are listening to what students want instead of necessarily concentrating on what they want to see from a staff point of view. As far as putting all the freshman in the same dorm wing, I thought that was kind of weird but in reality of it, I suppose it is a good idea. Over all, I enjoyed reading this article and I thought it was interesting.

The article "Dear Dads: Save Your Sons" by Christopher N. Bacorn which was published on December 6th,1992; Newsweek. fathers influence their child when they are involved in their lives.
The article is about a boy who is 15 years old and he was involved with drugs, gangs, violence, and he even had failing grades in school. Ever since his dad left, he has felt like anything he does, nobody would care. His went to go talk to a shrink to see if they could do anything to help her son. The shrink explained to the mom that, he needs some kind of positive male figure in his life to show him how to be a man and to do things the right way instead of him thinking that getting into trouble is the only way to do things. When the mom wanted the shrink to talk to her son, she did but the son just thought she was dumb and clueless because he didn't think there was anything wrong with him. Whatever the shrink had to say, he would deny it and shut it down. Eventually, the shrink came up with the idea that he should be put into sports that involve teamwork so he can be around other boys and build a positive surrounding for himself. When the son heard this, he said " that's for dorks". At that point the shrink didn't know what else to do. Nothing was working to get him to be involved with other boys. The main point of this message is, when fathers aren't there for their child while they are growing up, they have no sense of male figure. They don't know their 'role' in society and often feel out of place.
I thought this article was very interesting. for three years of my life growing up, my dad left me so for awhile I didn't know what it was like to have an actual male figure in my life. Being a young girl, I can relate kind of to what the shrink was saying to get involved with activities that includes people with different genders. My first year of soccer really helped me build that image in my mind what it's like to have a male model in my life. I was kind of jealous of the other boys and girls on my soccer team or in general during school because they would always say "my dad helped do my hair today" or "my dad said we can play after school." whereas, I was the girl who said " my mom is bringing me to practice today, then we are going to the grocery store." until I was a little older and my mom got married, I finally get to say my dad this or my dad that. I do agree with the shrink, having a father or some sort of male model in your life actually helps you out in the long run.

"Poll: Many Americans don't see their kids as overweight" by Robert Preidt of HealthDay. The article is about parents who cannot see the fact that their child is overweight. http://t.healthyliving.msn.com/health-wellness/poll-many-americans-dont-see-their-kids-as-overweight-1
The article explains that 15% of parents say that their children are a little over weight. But, according to what national statistics have to say, 32% of children are literally overweight. Another interesting thing this article said was that, 69% of American adults are overweight themselves, 36% are obese, and only 6% are extremely obese. Parents are a major role in children's lives when it comes to what they eat. Researchers have found that families who eat in front of the TV or with other distractions around them, obesity is more likely for them because they aren't paying attention to what they are eating or how big of a portion they have in front of them. Towards the end of the article Robert explains that families who often have family celebrations of any kind, get off track from healthy eating and put out unhealthy foods such as Sweets, high fat and sugar foods such as many others that can lead to unnecessary weight gain that is hard to lose with only exercising and healthy eating again.
My Opinion is this, just because you are sitting in front of the TV while eating something, doesn't always mean that you are going to be eating a lot more than you normally would if you were sitting with the family at the dinner table. However, I do agree with the author. Sometimes it is hard to get yourself to eat healthy foods when you should instead of going to Chipotle to get a burrito. I also agree that the commercials do make it hard to not be so hungry while you see them, but parents should not be blaming their child's obesity entirely on the food commercials. The commercials don't call you by name and force you to buy their food, it's a personal choice whether you do or don't. If you don't want your child or anybody in your family to be overweight, then I think families should stop buying junk food and replace the chips and such with vegetables and fruits like grapes, apples and such.

"Man Makes Failed Attempt to Climb Out Eighth Story Window with Bed-Sheet Rope After Wife Locks Him in Bedroom" By Neetzan Zimmerman http://gawker.com/5985138/man-makes-failed-attempt-to-climb-out-eighth-story-window-with-bed+sheet-rope-after-wife-locks-him-in-bedroom In his article he explains that a man was trying to escape out of his apartment window 8 stories up from the ground by tying bed sheets together for a rope to climb down the side of the building. When the man fell the last 7 stories, he landed on a bush covered in snow and was able to walk away to a park ambulance down the street from where he fell. A police officer said that the man was trying to run away from his wife who was psycho and the only way he could escape was by going out the window and all he wanted to do was see his friends.
After reading this article, I still don't understand why anybody would have the courage to tie bed sheets together just to escape their wife. Also, when I first read this, I thought the author wrote the title of this article just to be funny, but as we can see here, the author was serious about what they meant. This shows that people do stupid things all the time and the media catches attention of it, and makes it a huge headline story.

The session I attended for Student Success Day was the Keynote Leadership Session by Patrick McGarrity. The session I attend is about how to manage your money when you have credit cards and how to maintain a good credit score. Patrick stated a good point in the middle of the session he said " unless you have more money than what you know what to do with, you need a job." He mentioned that nothing gets worse than your credit card getting maxed out and the best thing that can happen when you have a credit card is when you pay more than the minimum payment on your credit card statement, the credit score improves. I also learned that when you have a higher credit score that means you have to pay less interest and monthly payments. The main thing I got from this presentation is turn your job into a hobby and when bill collectors start bothering you there is no way to ignore them.
I personally thought this presentation was helpful because I learned a lot of things about finances I didn't know before and it's given me a lot of helpful tips to use when I start using my credit card for big payments in the near future. The information applied to me because I am planning to move out on my own soon and with all this information in mind, I know I can keep my self hopefully out of debt and not get myself into trouble with credit cards. What I can apply from this session to my career is I can ask if they have anything set up for retirement and I can ask what kind of benefits I can have from working with their business.

The article "I wont Hire People Who Use Poor Grammar. Here's Why." by Kyle Wiens here's the link to the article http://blogs.hbr.org/cs/2012/07/i_wont_hire_people_who_use_poo.html .
In the article " I wont Hire People Who Use Poor Grammar. Here's Why." by Kyle Wiens is saying that he wont hire people who don't know how to use proper punctuation while they are writing either papers or something for businesses because otherwise it makes him look bad. He is also explaining that it is really embarrassing when an adult doesn't know the differences between to and too while writing. Kyle explains that for people to get hired at his company which is called iFixit.com, they are required to take a grammar test before he considers hiring them. If they don't know how to spell or use proper grammar and even though they are fit for the job, he will not hire them because they use poor grammar. Towards the end of the article, Kyle is explaining that even though not all companies require a grammar test before they are hired, but they will look at how organized and neat your resume looks. If it looks sloppy, your automatically not considered for the job. "I guarantee that even if other companies aren't issuing grammar tests, they pay attention to sloppy mistakes on résumés."
I agree with the author to an extent about what they are saying in the article. However, I believe having the employees take a grammar test before being considered is a little too extreme to me. I understand that grammar and punctuation make a difference in what something means or the way it makes what they are trying to say be viewed differently but not everyone pays attention to detail like those and not everyone has enough knowledge I guess you could say to really understand the difference between certain words. Maybe they aren't applying to write things, maybe they are applying to do something else not related to writing.
